Cloud based media supply chains in IABM's future trends theatre

A Special Panel on Cloud

Media Supply Chain

“It should be easy to move between clouds. Avoid cloud lock-ins. A solution should be able to handle media that is both in the cloud, in other clouds and on-premise. Demand cost transparency, Make sure there is an API” was the message from Vidispine’s CTO, at the IABM Future Trends Theatre during IBC 2018.

IABM panel

During IBC we had some presence at the IABM Future Trend Theatre, where Isak, Vidispine’s CTO gave our view on the media supply chain of the future, and what it takes to build it. We have summarized his presentation in five points here, and also thrown in a video of the “Special Panel on Cloud” Isak also participated in.

We believe that the end-users should have full control over every step in the media supply chain, while still maintaining the overview of the total cost. During Isak’s presentation, he mentioned five important points regarding this:

1. Starting a media supply chain should be easy

It should be easy to get started. That’s why we have created the Vidinet platform that allows you to get a backbone for a media supply chain up and running within minutes. Together with the Vidispine Development Toolkit, you can have your first application ready within days.

2. It should be easy to grow, easy to scale up to any size of assets

Scaling of the media supply chain should be seamless no matter if you want to add on new functionality, increase performance or have new business needs to cover. In a true cloud solution, it should be possible to add on services and performance without having to negotiate with the vendors, especially when it comes to performance scaling.

3. It should be easy to move between cloud

Different cloud providers will have different services and solutions that are usable to you. Try to avoid solutions where you are locked into one cloud, to be able to have the full choice of best-of-breed services. Try to find a solution which can handle your assets no matter if they are on-premise, in your cloud or any other cloud.

4. Find a solution that has an API, it will always help you in the end

It will help you to integrate new components into the chain and it will be able for you to monitor the assets flow through the chain.

5. It should be possible to get an overview of the total cost when using cloud services

Even though most cloud vendors have a transparent price structure it is typically hard to understand what the actual cost of performing operations on an asset level, which makes it hard to understand costs for asset-centric workflows. With Vidinet you can control your costs with a transparent pay-as-you-go pricing structure and pre-execution cost estimates. The cost estimates natively built into the API and can be used to manually or automatically calculate costs of any operation on a per asset basis.
