Proud to Support Django Girls Umeå

We think it is important to encourage and show beginners, and non-programmers, that computer programming is not that hard. Understanding of software is important, and will be even more important in the future as software eats the world. One way is through workshops like Django Girls, focusing on inspiring women to start programming.

We love software and programming at Vidispine (after all, that’s what we do), and wish that everybody could get a taste of that world. Creating software is logical, and based in mathematics, but it’s also an art, in the sense that you can create anything from nothing. Start with a blank sheet and an idea, and you can build Photoshop to create real art, help farmers in Africa to get super local weather reports as a text message, or maybe build the next social media tool that connects real people. Opportunities are endless.

There are no limits besides your fantasy, and the more people with other skills and backgrounds than math and technology realise that, the more and better software will be produced. Diversity is needed to create truly amazing software products, and bringing more women into a male-dominated industry will increase diversity. We at Vidispine think it’s important that non-programmers realise that programming is not hard, and that you fairly quick can create something you can call your own. Workshops, coaching and sitting down with programmers are the best ways to get a head start into this world. Django Girls is doing just that, with a focus on inspiring women to become programmers. This is why we sponsor Django Girls Umeå, arranged by our friends at Codemill.

Django Girls? In their own words:

Django Girls is a non-profit organization and a community that empowers and helps women to organize free, one-day programming workshops by providing tools, resources and support.

We are really happy that Codemill decided to arrange this workshop, and wish them and all the participants good luck. Maybe we’ll even see you there, as we have Malin there giving a short inspirational talk on programming and what you can do with it. Have fun!
